We believe that as a business, it is our duty to be socially responsible for both our local community and the world at large. This belief underpins our core business principles and our team values and goes from providing fair trade refreshments for our staff, to raising thousands of pounds for charity.

Local Support

We aim to be central to our local community. To do this, we offer education and resources to local schools, playgroups, brownie and scout groups and so on. In 2006 we ran a toothbrush amnesty for local people to come and swap their old brush for a new one, and during Mouth Cancer Awareness Week in 2006 and 2007 we offered free mouth cancer screening for all. We have also supported numourous local fundraising efforts – including the KLB school trip to Tanzania, Wotton Electric Picture House and Wotton Lion’s Club.

Charitable Giving

As of January 2007, we decided, as a team, to put a little more structure into our charitable giving. 10% of all practice private income goes to a separate charity – chipping manor charities. Each year, a committee made up of patients, staff and friends of the practice will decide where this money will go. last year it was used to fund 2 vehicles to be used for essential work in Tanzania (please see below), and this year, to fund further work of Bridge2Aid.

Our Links with Tanzania

To date, Chipping Manor Practice has raised over £40,000 to support the work of Bridge2Aid in Tanzania. This has been done through fundraising events such as our annual Barn Dance, quiz nights, an Elvis night, a pudding evening, the churches together in Wotton, and through the amazing support of our patients and the people of Wotton.

Six members of the Chipping Manor Team – Phil, Pam, Wendy, Hannah, Chris and Dave - travelled to Tanzania in 2006 and 2007 – one of the poorest countries in the world. They worked in tooth camps treating some of the millions of adults and children who have no access to simple dental care. Whilst there, they also trained the local rural dental officers in simple extraction techniques, so they could to carry on with the work when they returned to Wotton-Under-Edge. Some of the money raised also paid for essential equipment to be left behind. In 2008, Shaenna and Phil will return, and in 2009 Pam, Jo and Angie will return to carry on with the vital work.

Also in 2007, Shaenna worked with the same charity – Bridge2Aid – in a leprosy treatment centre. She carried out essential building and cleaning work, and helped to run a play scheme for the children in the centre.

Other Fundraising Projects

  • For Children in Need 2005, two of our team members dressed up in wedding dresses (Phil and Ali) and visited the pubs in Wotton. They raised £248.
  • In July 2004, the team raised £2,000 for Dentaid and Winstons Wish by holding a summer Fair, including a sponsored leg wax!
  • In 2006, after our practice relocation, we donated our old computer system to Green standards who will be reusing them in a school in Liberia.
